Grandmother's Chocolate Sheet Cake
Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 recipe icing
  •  
  • note: needs ⅛ to ¼ tsp salt
Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Sift together sugar and flour in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine butter, shortening, water and cocoa in a medium saucepan. Bring to a rapid boil. Once it boils pour over flour mixture and stir well until combined.
  4. Add buttermilk, eggs, soda and vanilla.
  5. Mix well and pour into a greased 16 x 11 sheet pan. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees.
  6. Start icing 5 minutes before cake is done. Pour over warm cake.
