This recipe, from Madge Beal, dated Sept. 10, 1980, is hand-written in the back of one of my mother-in-law's cookbooks.

Ingredients
  • 2 c. flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 2½ c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. pureed baby food prunes
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. oil
  • 1¼ c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp. white corn syrup
Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Grease & flour bundt pan.
  3. Beat flour, eggs, 2-c. sugar, baking soda, prunes, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, oil, & 1-c. buttermilk together till smooth.
  4. (The recipe doesn’t say when to add the nuts, but I assume you mix them in at this point.)
  5. Pour batter in bundt pan & bake 70-mins.
  6. Cool in pan for 20-mins. before removing.
  7. Put remaining sugar & buttermilk, plus butter & corn syrup into saucepan.
  8. Cook syrup over low heat for 10-mins., stirring constantly.
  9. Prick cake repeatedly with fork or skewer; then pour topping over cake.
