I've not tried this recipe, but I do have a mental image of Hubby & his siblings coming home from school to these. I've reprinted the recipe as modified by his mother. Her notes indicate that she did not modify the ingredients, but did modify the way she made the cookies.

Obviously, the cookies can be cut into any shape & can be iced, if desired.
Ingredients
  • 1 c. - shortening
  • 2 c. - brown sugar
  • 4 squares - baking chocolate
  • 2 - eggs
  • ¾ c. - milk
  • 4½ c. - flour
  • 1 tsp. - baking soda
  • 2 tsp. - baking powder
  • 2 tsp. - vanilla
Steps
  1. Melt & cool chocolate.
  2. Cream shortening & sugar together; then, beat in chocolate, eggs, & vanilla. (This is Mother-In-Law's version. The original recipe called for creaming only the shortening; then stirring the sugar in with the chocolate, etc.)
  3. Combine flour, baking soda, & baking powder; then, add to chocolate mixture in thirds, alternating with milk, stirring only to blend after each.
  4. Chill dough for 1½ to 2 hrs.
  5. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  6. Flour pastry board & roll out dough to ⅛-in. thickness. Cut into shapes & bake 8 to 10 mins.
