Originated during the Depression under Pres. Roosevelt’s Works Project, about 1933
Ingredients
  • 1 C raisins
  • 2 C water
  • ¾ C butter (original recipe called for Crisco)
  • 1 C brown Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 3 C Flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
Steps
  1. Boil 1 cup raisins in 2 cups water until liquid is reduced to ½ Cup.
  2. Cream together shortening, brown sugar, egg and vanilla.
  3. Sift together the flour, soda and baking powder.
  4. Add sifted ingredients and ½ cup raisin liquid alternately to shortening ingredients. Fold in raisins. Add a bit more liquid if it is too stiff.
  5. Drop by tablespoon onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or greased. Bake 10 to 13 minutes at 350. Do not over bake. They should be soft.
