Originated during the Depression under Pres. Roosevelt’s Works Project, about 1933
Ingredients
- 1 C raisins
- 2 C water
- ¾ C butter (original recipe called for Crisco)
- 1 C brown Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 3 C Flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
Steps
- Boil 1 cup raisins in 2 cups water until liquid is reduced to ½ Cup.
- Cream together shortening, brown sugar, egg and vanilla.
- Sift together the flour, soda and baking powder.
- Add sifted ingredients and ½ cup raisin liquid alternately to shortening ingredients. Fold in raisins. Add a bit more liquid if it is too stiff.
- Drop by tablespoon onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or greased. Bake 10 to 13 minutes at 350. Do not over bake. They should be soft.
