  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar - or lemon juice, to taste
  • white pepper, to taste
  • cayenne pepper, to taste
  • ¾ to 1 cup canned lite coconut milk - see Notes for other options
  • 2 to 3 Tablespoons vegan butter
  • a few drops of liquid smoke
