Crispy Fried Red or Green Tomatoes
Ingredients
  • 10 plum tomatoes, ends trimmed, sliced crosswise, ¼ to ½ inch thick
  • 1 ½ pounds green tomatoes, cored and sliced ¼-inch thick (4 or 5 usually)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ cups parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup minced fresh basil for serving if desired
  • Lemon wedges for serving if desired
