Ingredients
  • 5 c uncooked macaroni (1 lb of shells)
  • ½ c butter
  • ½ c flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • Dash of pepper
  • 4 ½ c milk
  • Grated onion (I use about ¼ tsp onion powder instead)
  • 4 c grated cheddar cheese
  • 6 T butter, melted
  • 1 c bread crumbs (panko is best)
Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Cook macaroni as directed. Melt butter and remove from heat. Stir in flour, salt, mustard and pepper & onion powder til smooth. Gradually add milk, bring to boiling, stirring constantly. Layer ½ macaroni in casserole w 1 ½ c cheese. Repeat. Pour sauce over top, sprinkle with remaining cup of cheese. Toss butter with crumbs and sprinkle on top. Bake uncovered 30 minutes.
