Spinach and Lentil Soup - Nice and Spicy

1¼ cup brown lentils (dry)

6 cups fresh spinach (coarsely chopped)

2 cups canned tomatoes (diced)

1 large carrot (diced)

4 stalks celery (diced)

1 medium onion (diced)

3 cloves garlic (minced)

4 bay leaves

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp paprika

salt (optional)

900 ml vegetable broth

5 cups water
