Swizzle or Switchel
Ingredients
  • I also made Swizzle (also called Switchel in some areas) with Andy today! We call it Melungeon lemonade but the origins of Swizzle aren't really known, it's possible we picked it up from our African or Caribbean ancestors, but it gained popularity quickly among outdoor laborers by the 1800s.  It was most often made by farmers workin all day under the hot sun, due to it being incredibly hydrating, it's like a Gatorade only healthier.
  • subheading: There's lots of different recipes for Swizzle so you can tweak it for your personal taste, but this is my recipe:
  • 2 small oranges
  • 2 large lemons
  • Handful of fresh chopped ginger root
  • Handful of fresh chopped mint sprigs
  • ½C Apple cider vinegar
  • Choice of sweetener to taste (traditionally it was molasses, I prefer sugar or honey).
  • 48 oz water.
