  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 cup vegetable broth ( chicken broth for a non-vegetarian option)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (to balance the acidity)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil (fresh basil works even better if you have it!)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup heavy cream (optional, but it adds a lovely richness)
