Ingredients
  • 10 medium potatoes, about 2 lbs
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • dash black pepper
  • dash grated nutmeg
  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1½ cups whipping cream
  • ⅓cup milk
Steps
  1. Peel and slice potatoes thinly. Use a food processor if available.
  2. Lightly grease an ovenproof casserole. Layer potato slices in casserole, sprinkling each layer with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Press garlic over mixture. Add cream and milk. You may prepare ahead of time up to this step.
  3. Back at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes or until potatoes are soft and creamy and golden brown on surface.
Notes
  • Prep: easy. Cost: inexpensive. Prep time: 1 hour total; 40 minutes baking time. Oven temp: 400 degrees-middle rack. Good served with: Any roasted meat, poultry or broiled fish. Serve with red or white wine, depending on whether meat or  fish is main course. Beer or mineral water are other alternatives. Tips: Omit milk and use 1 ½ cups half-and-half instead of whipping cream for a leaner gratin.
