  • toothpicks or cooking twine

  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 small leek
  • 2 celery sticks
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • a pinch of sugar
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • salt, pepper to taste
