Whole Red Lentils with Cumin & Shallots (Sabut Masoor)

Ingredients
  • 200 g/7 oz whole red lentils (sabut masoor)
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ tbsp olive or peanut oil
  • generous pinch of ground asafoetida
  • ¼ tsp whole cumin seeds
  • 2 to 3 dried hot red chillies
  • 1 good-sized shallot, peeled and cut into fine slivers
  • butter (optional)
  • lime or lemon wedges (optional)
