1½ cup self-raising flour

½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tsp mixed spice

1 cup (125g) walnuts chopped

100 g butter

¾ cup brown sugar

½ cup water

1½ cupS (155g) dates chopped

1 egg lightly beaten
