Grandma Miller's Nutmeg Christmas Cookies
Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour (240 g)
  • 1 cup sugar (200 g)
  • 1½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 to 4 teaspoons nutmeg
  • ½ cup shortening (or stick butter)
  • 2 eggs (well beaten)
Steps
  1. Cream butter and sugar
  2. Add eggs and mix
  3. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg
  4. Place in wax paper and chill
  5. Roll in ⅛ inch think and cut out cookies
  6. Sprinkle sugar sprinkles (not chalky kind) on top before baking
  7. Bake for 10 min (or less, depending on thickness) at 375 degrees
Notes
  • To get thin enough cookies spread a chunk of the warm dough on a cookie sheet sandwiched between parchment/wax paper. Put it in the freezer until hard and then use cookie cutter on the pan. Once all the shapes are cut put the pan back in the freezer until hard and then peel the left over dough off.
  • Put red and green sprinkles on before putting in the oven
  • Circle shapes are easiest because you can twist them
  • Be cautious of putting cookies too close together in the cut out stage
  • Bake for 7 minutes if very thin
