Cannoli with Pastry Cream Filling
Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3 inch strip of lemon zest
  • 8 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • subheading: For the cannoli shells:
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup red wine or Marsala
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 3 tbsp. milk
  • 1 egg white (for sealing the edges of the dough) (reserved from the pastry cream recipe)
  • vegetable oil for frying (sunflower or cannola oil can be used)
  • subheading: For garnishing:
  • powdered sugar optional
  • chopped pistachios optional
  • grated chocolate or chocolate chips optional
