Julie's Bircher Muesli
loading...
My version of my dad's favorite breakfast dish, going back to his childhood in Switzerland.
Servings: 1
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- ¾ cup quick oats
- ½ cup milk
- 1 small tart apple, diced (approx ¾ cup)
- 1 Tbs lemon juice
- a handful of nuts, coarsely chopped (approx ¼ cup)
- a few strawberries or other fresh fruit (raspberries or peaches are also fantastic), diced
Steps
- Combine the oats and milk in a large cereal or pasta bowl. Let sit for about 15 minutes.
- While oats & milk are soaking, dice the fruit and chop the nuts. Check the consistency of the oats; if too thick, add more milk. The mixture should be soft and mushy.
- Add remaining ingredients to serving bowl; stir gently to combine.
Notes
- You may wish to experiment with the ratio of ingredients; the goal is to have lots of contrasting textures and flavors (mushy oats + crisp apple + crunchy nuts; sweet fruit + tart lemon).
- I think my dad also used to add a dollop of jam. I personally don't think that is necessary.
- Do not peel the apple.
