Make-Ahead Eggnog French Toast Casserole

  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread (about 16 ounces), cut into 1-inch-thick slices
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature, divided
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3 cups eggnog
  • 1 cup whole or 2% milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon, or 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar, ground cinnamon, and warm maple syrup, for serving
