Angie’s Rutabaga Side Dish In Blender or Stove
Ingredients
  • 1 large rutabaga (also called turnip or swede; the kind that comes waxed)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
Steps
  1. subheading: Blender:
  2. I would cut it up and put it in the blender with some chicken stock or water, maybe 1 cup  heat on high until it softens. Then see if you need to drain any liquid. If not, add remaining ingredients and blend it up to your desired consistency. You can even put in larger chunks and pulse blend a couple of times to get the pieces smaller for faster cooking. I did that with the beets.
  3. subheading: Stove:
  4. 1.Wash the turnip and peel it with a potato peeler.
  5. 2.Cut it the rutabaga into rough cubes. Don't worry about keeping the size or shape consistent; it will be mashed up later.
  6. 3.Bring a medium pot of water to the boil and add about one teaspoon of salt. Add the turnip.
  7. 4.Boil for about 45 minutes; drain.
  8. 5.Add about ¼ cup butter or margarine and the brown sugar.
  9. 6.Mash all the ingredients together.
  10. 7.Stir, then add salt and pepper to taste.
