  • 2 large red bell peppers halved core and seeds removed
  • 1 sprig fresh basil plus more for garnish optional
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large white onion diced
  • 3 large cloves garlic roughly chopped
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon dried chili flakes optional
  • 2 cups low sodium vegetable or chicken broth or water
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt or more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ cup half and half cream or milk more to taste
