homemade sodas for soda stream
Ingredients
  • 1 to 1 ⅓ cup sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon Kool-Aid lemonade unsweetened drink mix or citric acid
  • 1 cup very hot water
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • Dissolve the sugar and citric acid or Kool-Aid in the hot water.
  • Add the corn syrup and stir well.
Steps
  1. 1 cup very hot water
  2. 1 cup corn syrup
  3. Dissolve the sugar and citric acid or Kool-Aid in the hot water.
  4. Add the corn syrup and stir well.
  5. subheading: To this simple syrup base, you can add the following for different flavors:
  6. Cream Soda: ¾ teaspoon vanilla
  7. Root Beer: 1 teaspoon McCormick root beer concentrate
  8. 7-Up: 1 tablespoon bottled lime juice and 2 tablespoons bottled lemon juice
  9. Squirt: 1 ½ cups white grapefruit juice
  10. Lime Soda: 1 tablespoon bottled lime juice and 1 teaspoon lime extract
  11. Those are the ones I've done so far with success. Once you add the flavoring, mix well and chill until cold.
  12. To make a soda: ¼ cup flavored syrup to 1 cup soda water.
Notes
  • I make the same flavors, but I do it a bit differently:
  • I cut down on bottles and increase flexibility by just making up the plain simple syrup. That way you can also make low calorie soda.
  • For simple syrup I have been using half granulated pure cane sugar (the "default" household sugar in Canada) and half water, and leaving out the corn syrup, but you can do it either way. I also don't bother to heat it - I just shake the bottle until dissolved.
  • I add a tablespoon or two of the simple syrup OR a couple of squirts of zero calorie natural liquid stevia to water carbonated in the 500 ml bottle, and then add the flavor ingredients.
  • I also add a few drops of McCormick's food color to enhance the look of cream soda (red where I live), lime soda (green) and Squirt (yellow). If I want a dark "gourmet" cream soda instead of red, or a darker root beer, I use ¼ tsp of Grace Browning Caramel.
  • For citric acid I either add a few drops of LorAnn Tart & Sour, or a splash of bottled ReaLemon juice (no Koo lAid).
  • I then add to the 500 ml bottle:
  • ¼ to ½ tsp of pure vanilla extract for cream soda. If I have it I also add ⅛ tsp LorAnn Marshmallow or Cotton Candy flavor.
  • ½ tsp or so root beer concentrate (I use LorAnn as I can't find McCormick in Canada) for root beer.
  • For 7-Up I use ½ Tbsp ReaLime and 1 Tbsp ReaLemon juice.
  • For Lime Rickey I use 1 Tbsp ReaLime juice and 2 Tbsp Tropicana Orange Juice with some pulp (I like pulp in lime rickey),
  • For Squirt, I use 3 Tbsp of Tropicana Red Grapefruit juice.
  • A local favourite where I live is Grapefruit and Lime: 2 Tbsp Tropicana Red Grapefruit juice, 1 Tbsp ReaLime, 1 Tbsp Tropicana Orange Juice with some pulp.
  • For Orange "Krush" soda I use 3 Tbsp Tropicana Orange Juice with some pulp and about ¼ tsp of McCormick's Pure Orange Extract, along with drops of Orange (or equal parts Red and Yellow) food color.
