16 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch pieces

2 tablespoons shortening, well chilled, cut into ½-inch pieces

5 to 8 tablespoons ice water

1 egg white, lightly beaten

4 eggs

1 ¼ cups dark corn syrup

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

1 ½ cups pecan pieces

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup pecan halves
