Ingredients
- 1½ cups sifted all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup butter
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ⅔ cup milk
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 4 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples

- 2 tablespoons flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons butter
Steps
- Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk, blending thoroughly. Turn half the batter into a greased 8-inch square cake pan. Add in layers: half the cheese, half the apples, then remaining cheese, batter and apples.
- To prepare the topping, combine dry ingredients; cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apples. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in a 375°F oven. Serve warm. Store leftover cake in the refrigerator Reheat 15 minutes at 325°F before serving. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
