Ingredients
  • 1 ounce semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (when measuring, use the spoon and level method)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon espresso powder
  • ¼ teaspoon table salt
  • ¼ cup (2 ounces or 4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar (soft and moist, not dry and crumbly)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup buttermilk, room temperature (or substitute whole milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar added. Do not use skim or low fat.)
  • 2 tablespoons hot coffee (or substitute beer or hot water)
