Ingredients
  • ½ pound butter (1 cup)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. cream of tarter
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 4 to 5 cups flour
  • note: plus heavy flouring when rolling out
  •  
  • subheading: Paint:
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 7 tsp. water
  • 5 drops of food coloring
Steps
  1. Cream butter and sugar together in electric mixer.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla and mix.
  3. Slowly add all dry ingredients except flour and mix until well blended.
  4. Add flour in incriments of 2 cup, 1 cup, 1 cup, ¼ cup…
  5. Roll cookie dough onto floured surface or pastry mat and cut into desired shapes.
  6. Mix ingredients for cookie paint and paint cookies if desired.
  7. Bake at 350⁰F for 8 to 10 minutes (a little longer if you made thick cookies)
Notes
  • Cookies puff up during baking and may not look done while in the oven, even though they are.
  • Cookies can be decorated with icing after baking rather than with the paint.
